Hi Valentino

Thank you for your quick reply - and YES I will very much like to participate in the winter test. I will send you the required as soon as possible, but can right now tell you that I live on the countryside about 85 km. west of the capitol of Denmark - Copenhagen. The correct position is Latitude 55.30N and longitude 11.20E. The altitude is 25m over sea level. The weather in Denmark is rather humid. The last couple of summers have been dry, but from late September until May, we have a lot of rain or snow. The temperature in summer can get up to 30 degrees and in winter it is mostly around 0 degrees, but can get as low as 20 degrees.

I keep my cactus in a heated greenhouse, that I have build last year. It is 30 square meters. I keep the temperature at 8 degrees during winter. The cactus can do with much less, but my wife collect succulents, and they require more heat. I can have the cold hardy plants in my old greenhouse, that for the moment are used for storing plants, that can't do with the wet climate during winter.

Plants
March 03 2004 Hello again...Send you a picture of the three plants I've received, just potted. The one on the left is in my normal greenhouse, and the two other in the cold greenhouse.  The plants are still OK. We have had night temperatures down to -7' the last two weeks, but it haven't had any effect on the plants. I plan to start watering the plants in the greenhouse in about a fortnight, if the weather is sunny. Cheers    Hans Chr. Askly
March 21 2003 ...The plants in the winter hardy contest are doing fine. the lowest temperature recorded is -12' in February. Now the temperature is round 5 to 10' C, but it is rather humid....
April 12 2003 A little information on the test-plants. They are doing very well. I've watered the plants in the cold house for the first time on April the 1'st, and they are now looking just as strong and healthy as the Pediocactus in the greenhouse. Both of the Pediocacti have big flower buds, and I think they will flower within the next week. I'll send you some photos, when they flower.
July 12 2004 ...the winter test plants are all doing well and growing. There is no sign of different growth in the two Pediocacti, despite of their different environment during the winter. The lowest temperature in the winter was – 12’ C in the cold house. I also include a picture of flowers in the Pediocactus despainii from the cold house taken on April 15th.
April 2006 The plants from the winter hardy test are still doing fine. There are flower buds in both of the plants in the “cold house” and the one in the heated greenhouse. This winter we had down to minus 14 degrees Celsius.
Cheers  Hans Chr. Askly
