[From Latin adjective “vernalis”
meaning “of the spring” (from Latin “ver” “spring”)]
The Latin name "ver" spring
inspired this word, as well as the name of the vernal equinox,
which marks the beginning of spring. Incidentally, Latin "prima
vera", meaning "first (earliest) spring," comes the English
adjective primaveral, which applies to the same time of
year. (e.g.: primaveral
allergy)
The corresponding adjectives for
summer,
autumn, and
winter are
aestival,
autumnal, and
hibernal.
