The
genus"Stapelia"
was named
in honour of Johannes van Stapel, who published drawings and
descriptions of the first Stapeliae discovered (Orbea
variegata)
Type species: The genus Stapelia has been set up by
Linnaeus in 1737, he based the genus on Stapelia hirsuta
and
Stapelia variegata. (Later transferred in the genus
Orbea)
